The IS420UCSCH2A is a standalone controller in GE's Mark VIe UCSE series. It is a single-module, all-in-one controller that requires no batteries or hardware jumper settings, and is a high-performance control unit designed specifically for industrial power plants.
This controller is installed independently on the control cabinet panel and communicates with system I/O modules and higher-level devices via onboard IONet, Ethernet, and high-speed serial interfaces. It does not feature a local backplane I/O; all field signals are acquired by external I/O modules, making it the core computational and logic unit within a distributed architecture.
Thanks to its high stability, strong compatibility, and comprehensive safety design, this controller can function independently as a turbine controller or be used for DCS and balance-of-plant (BoP) control. The original PLC system at a certain hydropower plant had become outdated and needed to be upgraded to an open, reliable controller that could be integrated with a remote monitoring center. Therefore, the IS420UCSCH2A was deployed to replace the existing controller, utilizing its eight Ethernet ports to connect to local I/O, speed controllers, the excitation system, and the host computer, respectively.
Encrypted remote maintenance is enabled through built-in security features. Following the upgrade, the system's MTBF increased threefold, and operations and maintenance personnel can perform secure diagnostics via VPN, resulting in an 80% reduction in unplanned downtime annually.
