||
The IS215VPROH1B is a VME protection component used in gas turbine and steam turbine control systems, commonly referred to as a VPRO protection board. It is primarily used to provide independent emergency overspeed protection and works in conjunction with terminal boards such as the TPRO and TREG to perform trip solenoid valve control, speed monitoring, and backup protection functions.
This model is mounted in a VME rack and is used in conjunction with the Mark VI protection module. Each VPRO board features an independent processor, I/O interfaces, power supply, and Ethernet communication interface, and can exchange diagnostic information with the controller via IONet.
In the Mark VI architecture, the main controller is responsible for conventional closed-loop control of combustion, rotational speed, temperature, and other parameters. The VPRO board, on the other hand, operates within a protection module that is physically isolated from the main controller. It features an independent processor, power supply, and I/O channels, and is dedicated to executing safety logic such as overspeed, overtemperature, and backup synchronization checks. It directly drives 125 VDC trip solenoids via the TREG terminal board.

- Hardware Architecture: 6U VME dual-board stack (bottom-layer motherboard + top-layer IS200VPRW)
- Redundancy Scheme: Three VPROs configured as a TMR, with a two-out-of-three trip voting mechanism
- Speed Sensor Inputs: Passive magnetoresistive speed measurement channels
- Thermocouple Inputs: Typically 3 or 9 channels
- Analog Current Inputs: 3 channels
- Trip Relay Management: 12 relays controlled via TREG; 9 relays divided into three groups to drive three trip solenoids
- Second TREG Board Support: Supported (powered via J4 connector)
- Communication Interface: IONet Ethernet (BNC)
- Supply Voltage: 70–145 VDC and 125 VDC
- Operating Temperature: 0°C to +45°C
- Safety Compliance: SIL 2/3 capability, compliant with the IEC 61508 safety circuit standard
| Model | Identification | Key Differences |
|---|---|---|
| IS215VPROH1B | Mark VI VPRO Protection Board | Functionally equivalent to VPROH1A |
| IS215VPROH1A | Early VPRO Protection Boards | Replaced by VPROH1B |
| IS215VPROH2B | Mark VI VPRO Protection Board | Low-power version; supports only one TREG |
| IS200VPROH1B | Old names / similar series boards | Different naming conventions; compatibility must be confirmed separately |
- Check the diagnostic indicator lights: The front-panel LEDs indicate operational, fault, and diagnostic alarm statuses. A normal "Operating" status typically flashes green; a fault may be indicated by a red light.
- Clean the rack environment regularly: Keep the control cabinet well-ventilated to prevent dust buildup, which can impair heat dissipation.
- Check connector tightness: After inserting the VPRO board into the VME rack, ensure that the top and bottom mounting screws are securely fastened.
- Review trip circuit test records: Periodically test the EOS trip function in accordance with power plant or unit maintenance procedures.
- Avoid the risk of live insertion/removal: Although the VPRO supports hot-swap replacement, verify the system status and safety procedures before performing any operations.
- Maintain replacement records: Record the board serial number, firmware version, replacement date, and diagnostic information for future traceability.
During maintenance on a Mark VI system of a certain gas turbine, the unit triggered an EOS system diagnostic alarm. Maintenance personnel checked the VPRO channel status via the operator interface and discovered an abnormal relay drive feedback on one of the VPRO boards.
Since the system employs a triple-redundant configuration, the unit continued to operate after confirming that protection functions remained intact, and the faulty VPRO board was replaced during a scheduled outage window. After the replacement, the trip circuit test was rerun, and the diagnostic alarm cleared.
It is used for emergency overspeed protection and emergency trip control in the Mark VI system. It is a standalone protection component and does not replace the main controller.
Yes. In a triple-redundant configuration, a single VPRO board can typically be replaced while the unit is running, provided that on-site safety procedures and the GE maintenance manual are followed.
The VPROH2B is a low-power version that typically supports only one TREG board; the VPROH1B supports a more complete TREG configuration.
Typically, the warranty period for original products is 12 months.
